CHICAGO — On April 2nd–4th 2010, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) held their 10th annual Education Forum which took place at the Westin O’Hare Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The three-day forum was co-hosted by the Council of Islamic Schools of North America (CISNA).
The conference gathered over 450 full-time Islamic school teachers from across North America. The Islamic Teacher Education Program (ITEP) made its American debut with a workshop conducted by Dr. Nadeem Memon (Director of Education, Razi) and Qaiser Ahmad (Education Consultant, Razi).
Dr. Memon and Mr. Ahmad’s workshop was titled Empowering Muslim Students through Enhancing Teacher Training in Islamic Schools. It articulated the need for an Islamic Pedagogy and introduced the Islamic Teacher Education Program, an online program being offered in partnership with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto in January 2011.
Razi also featured ITEP at a booth situated right in front of the main hall. “The sentiment is that educators have been waiting for something like ITEP for a long time” said Ahmad Munawar (Director of Marketing, Razi). “Through our interactions with educators we can tell that professional development for Islamic schools is going to be a very hot topic in the future and we’re glad ITEP will be at the forefront of that conversation.”
The sessions throughout the weekend had a common theme: “Crayons to College: Empowering Muslim Students to Color a Brighter World”. The forum helped attendees reflect on their teaching practice through a series of roundtable discussions, seminars, and interactive workshops.
